Blackhawk Statue
Weird how Time changes so much, huh?
I was born in Northern Illinois and traveled, often, to the NW Corner of the State to visit my Grandma Williams' Mother. Emma Weed.....the specific town was Oregon, Illinois, where my Grandma, Mable Weed, acted as babysitter for a very young Ronald Reagan, way back when.....
On the drive from the cornfield country of DeKalb County to the bluffs of the Rock River/Mississippi River Confluence, Paw always pointed out the "Blackhawk Statue"......never, even once, did we stop to get a closer look and what I now find on the Internet is quite different than what I recall!
Things, such as the Landscape, have undoubtedly changed in the last half-Century!
Lorada Taft, who died in 1936, created the Statue. It actually has no official connection to the Cheiftain, Blackhawk, at all! It was created as a Memorial to All Native Americans of the area, in Honor of how they may have stood on the ridge and viewed their lovely turf!
I recall being told that the "Ancient Statue" was in a serious state of dis-repair but, now, with Geezer Hindsight, I realize that Maw & Paw were in their early to mid twenties and should not be held accountable for their mis-information! Besides, as I recall, the Internet was usually "down" in them long-ago days!
I always had the impression that the Blackhawk Statue had been there for Centuries!
Ah, Well! Reality Sucks, huh?
Next thing I know, I'll be exposed as a "fake" King of Arizona!
